My understanding is - which could be wrong - that the factory head gaskets on the 4.6l especially always fail at 60-70k, but that the replacements don't seem to suffer the same early deaths. Just stuff I've read - HG status is positively important.
Frankly, I'm not really excited to own one. But I'm trying to come up with a compromise on something that I can use for towing, and the girl can use for her short commute. That list is tiny. So, I'm a little scared to go down this road (I'd rather it be a Yukon!) but I don't have a lot of other options. I've almost convinced myself that after owning Alfas and Saabs, Land Rover weirdnesses won't be THAT painful.
Sometime this year or next she wants to get a C230, but in the short term we need something 4WD, and it would be nicer to simultaneously replace my Suburban and her Rodeo with a single vehicle. My hope is that I'm buying something close enough to the bottom of its depreciation that down the road we can get rid of it, and I can get a Suburban back and she can have her C230. :)
