A good friend of mine works for 2Bennett here, so I've got a very good (the best!) Audi hookup. They're changing the transmission fluid and filter now - I just didn't feel like laying under a car in this weather. My friend knows the transmissions, so he'll be able to get a good look at it while the pan is off. The dash display works perfectly (no dead pixels, I am looking at YOU Saab SID!!!), the transmission shifts perfectly.
The car has 123k on it, so I can only imagine it's midway through it's second timing belt. I'm planning on doing it again at about 140k, which should be plenty safe. Parts for the 1.8T are cheap (~$200) - quite a difference between my XR4Ti ($40 in parts) or my Alfa ($800 in parts) :). 2Bennett is ~$750 total if I pay them, which is plenty reasonable. A timing belt is something I'd do myself, though - I've done it on the 2.8 before so the 1.8 has *got* to be easier.
I checked on the control arms when I dropped it off - they're only $60 each and easy enough to do - I helped a friend do them (and his timing belt) on his '98 A4 2.8. Also installed an entire Bilstein suspension at the same time.
Assuming something horrible doesn't come out of the transmission we'll put a Stage 1 APR chip in it and some better pads & rotors, and it should make an awesome car for a couple years.
Thanks for the thoughts!
