We haven't driven a Tahoe, but I could tell when driving the Rover it's size was on the edge of her comfort zone. Or, maybe the size was on the edge of my comfort zone watching her drive? :)
I'd considered 4Runners, but I'm just not willing to pay the Toyota tax. Plus the V8 can be a little maintenance intensive...
We may have actually resolved on an 02+ Mountaineer. They are great drives being independent suspension all the way around, and both the V6 and V8 have good towing ability. Full-time AWD and a quiet, rigid cabin make for a very comfortable ride. They won piles of awards for being great tow vehicles, and they have superb safety records. Unfortunately a cheaper, more common Explorer isn't an option since UHaul won't rent to them...
It's a little more than I wanted to spend on this (comment about the Trollblazer above) but may be the exact right choice.
If we can't work this out soon I'm going to buy an A4 1.8T and a newer Suburban and call it a day.
