have you tried the back seat while adjusted the front for your driving comfort ?
The 9-5 has a lot more leg room at the rear than S4/A4. The S60 has little legroom for adults. The 9-3SS has more rear leg room than the S60.
Think of yourself sitting back there with a child seat or two, see how much space you have left to belt the child into the infant seats or even an occasional adult there to keep an eye on the child.
You want to look at cars about the size of the 9-5, i.e. A6 and the V70 class.
I agree with MarkP, give the Subaru a try, the rear seat space is still tight but I think it is better than the S60 and a lot cheaper than the S4. Also take a look at the Acura TL, small trunk, but reasonable rear seat space.
You may want to consider a good condition 2002 or later loaded 9-5 Aero and just put more ponies in it. You would end up with a much better all around car than any of those you or I mentioned. You could do the same for a slightly used Audi 2.7T or 4.2.
