In California you can buy W126 V8s sedans all day for $4k or less. For a family mobile, it might be worth considering a lesser 380, although in my limited experience the higher-end Benzes were better built to start with, and better maintained over the years. I've seen a number of W126s with only one or two owners that look to be in great shape. I suspect repairs are not cheap when you need them, but OTOH I'd wager these cars were so overbuilt to start with, they should be very reliable even when they're 20 years old and with high mileage. They are huge, comfortable cars with good safety features. I think any .5 kid would be totally comfortable riding in the middle rear seat. Plus, unlike our poor Saabs, they also have free-flowing parts. :(
