When I was shopping I was specifically looking at the 4cyl. for those reasons, not much less go, but better fuel economy. plus the 6cyl command more money on the used market. Mine suffers from wind leakage, rattles, and the random odd noise, BUT the engine and transmission are good, the interior is decent looking, and I paid 3k for it, and will put at least 100k miles on it before I get rid of it (3years or so). One thing I did do is put some good tires and wheels on it. (225/50ZR16 continental DWS, on 16x7.5 rims). When I first had it it would understear on every corner. but now It actually tracks really well, and while not fast, is a more fun to drive. It has obviously been in an accident, and fixed with used parts (looks like a minor crash on the front driver's side)but again I paid 3k for it, and the AC works great!
I'm a big fan of 4 cyl engines, They are typically easier to work on, cheaper to find parts for and to repair/maintain, are usually more fuel efficent, and you can get a decent amount of power out of them. One of my favorites was the 2,9L that was in my isuzu i-290, not becasue it was any good (its not) but because it is just ridiculous. How many 6cyl engines out there are the same size or smaller?
