It sounds like that makes the most sense for you... After burning a valve on a c900 on a long trip (with child), we decided we'd better not push that anymore... on that trip we had to rent something (in this case it was a Ford Freestyle crossover, which was actually quite good - I'd say the best of all the longish rentals we did)... for a few years thereafter, we rented other vehicles for long trips (often a month or thereabouts)... Subaru Outback, Forester, Mazda5, Acadia... I looked at it as a way to test out vehicles we might want to buy (Subarus were high on the list)... a month behind the wheel + some serious highway time is way better than a 10 minute dealer test drive... sometimes it was hard to rent what we wanted, other times, no big deal - develop a relationship with your local rental office, as that helps... wish we could have gotten a V70 or an A4 Avant (or even Passat wagon)... my problem is I am picky - the Subarus really showed that - we did not like them much (especially the new Forester - the vehicle dynamics of that thing are ghastly). We seem to like euro-wagons, which are hard to rent, and we frequently needed to be able to install roof racks... But if you're ok with american/asian sedans/vans/suvs and don't have crazy equipment transport needs, it can save a ton of $$$ to rent.
Where you really save $$ is insurance! We have the add on for our insurance that covers all rental cars (costs maybe $40/year). Rental costs were typically $1200 give or take for a month. So for that, we had a brand new car, fully ensured, no maintenance cost, and not taking a parking space in the driveway the rest of the year. The same cars bought new would have cost way more than $1200/y to insure, never mind the car payments! and the c900 is dirt cheap to insure (very safe, hard to steal, and worthless to repair, at least in the books of insurers)... Our insurance was *very* cheap!
All that said, every trip, I'd come back, get in the c900, take it for a spin + think, holy crap this is so much better... so we bought a 9-5, and the long drives are way more enjoyable... I am spending some on maintenance of the 9-5 + additional insurance cost, but it is worth it to me for the increased driving pleasure... if only rental agencies rented Saabs... if only more people had bought saabs... sigh...
