I am definitely one of those people who has a real hatred for Consumer Reports. Their metrics are all absolute and without context - An SUV rides worse than a sedan? DUH. The CVT exacerbates engine noise? DUH. I really can't take anything they say seriously.
I will *definitely* agree that a 2WD - especially FWD - Jeep makes no senses. There are plenty of wagon-y things with a manual transmission. If AWD was part of the equation, the Patriot seems to make some sense - it's the least cute of the cute utes, which in my mind is a good thing. A compact SUV with real offroad aspirations in a rarity in this country.
