I take it you've never driven a Saab B20T... or any other '70s turbo. They all had massive turbo lag, were not intercooled, and had shockingly low output compared to what we've got today. Saab's four made 130hp - comparable to Ford's. It was the state of the art in the late '70s - turbos were pretty new and Garrett didn't know how to make them much better than manufacturers knew how to implement them. Most of the European entries benefited from fuel injection for emissions which improved drivability, but the ingredients were otherwise similar. Like everyone else (Saab, Volvo, and Porsche to name a few), Ford's second round of turbocharged products (beginning in '83) were dramatically improved and quite good. The EEC-IV-powered 2.3t came back to power the SVO, TurboCoupe, and XR4Ti and those were all very good cars with excellent motors. Ford has an extremely rich history in turbos and built some of the most special turbocharged cars in history... dissing them because they screwed up 34 years ago is just spiteful and sensationalistic - especially when 30 years ago they'd already turned the whole thing around.
