I think most cars (by volume) were carb'd until the late '80s. I think GM had switched their entire line to EFI in/around '87, Ford a year or two earlier. I have no idea what Chrysler was doing, but I believe they were fairly early to the EFI party like Ford. Honda was still selling carbs in '87 (the Accord LX was carb'd, the LXi injected) for certain, same with Toyota and Nissan. Actually, I think the Japanese stuck to carbs longer than the domestics - I know Subaru and Isuzu had carbs as late as '90! I'm not sure what Mazda was doing, but I think they kept carbs at least in the B-series til almost '90.
What I've never understood is why most the European imports switched to EFI in the '70s "for emissions purposes" but nobody else did. Saab stopped selling carbs here in, what, '73? BMW too. But all the Japanese imports and the domestics stuck with carbs for another ~15 years. Was it just that European imports had higher margins or higher expectations? You really can't buy the emissions angle when nobody else had the same challenges. Japanese feedback carbs from the late '80s were masterpieces/nightmares of engineering... :)
Where was I going... oh yeah... there are a bunch of neat cars from the late '70s I'd love to own, many simply out of curiosity, but in California they are an incredible pain. They are still bound by emissions laws, so you can't modify them, and keeping all their crazy emissions equipment working so they can pass smog tests is almost impossible. Too bad... a 2nd gen f-body or a big old boaty wagon or Rabbit or Dasher would be cool - but getting it on the road legally would be *no fun*.
