yep - a year back I turned on the Deer Hunter - hadn't seen it in yrs and the opening scene made me say "oh my god - that was me" - in a locker room with chains hoisting clothes up to the ceiling. I worked one summer on the charging floor of the blast furnaces and 2 others on the RR - one time we had to go over to the coke ovens to work on some tracks and something went wrong with the pollution stuff in the coke ovens - toxic fumes everywhere.
I'm not really exaggerating about the productivity of the worker in the mills - many left hrs before their shift ended and didn't do much when they were there. I was a fireman for a couple of months on the night shift and the engine crew would move the cars for about 4 or 5 hrs then 2 of the guys would split and I and a engineer parked the loco and snoozed or read just in case we had to move some more cars. One night we drove the loco to a remote building at the west end of the plant to join a beer drinking barbecue in progress and they had some "working gals" available. unbelieveable. I was there in the summers of 70 71 and 72, with the blast furnace job got hired along with a friend who had long hair. Well the foreman assigns work to all of the summer hires except my long hared friend - so he asks the redneck foreman - "hey you forgot to assign me" - the foreman responds no I didn't, you are going to be the "gofer" and the rest of the time you just stay in the locker room until I find something for you to do, lol.
But that Lackawanna plant employed over 20,000 at it's peak. And it paid for a lot of my college edu.
