from wiki :
This meant the 2.3 L Turbo 4 was the sole "performance" engine. However, the Turbo 4 was plagued with reliability issues from its release. Inadequate lubrication led to premature turbo failure and even some engines catching fire. It was listed as an option through 1981, but quietly dropped in 1982
I was in my mid 20s when the American auto industry released with much fanfare the Chevy Vega and Ford Pinto - and saying these cars "would drive the imports off the American shores" In fact just the opposite happened.
And I worked during my college days in the steel mills and had a number of friends working in the US auto plants. Productivity and attention to quality was abysmal, workers rarely worked a complete 8hr shift and a good many showed up high or got high on the job. The auto industry was lucky to have survived because the Japanese were making far superior autos. The steel industry largely didn't.
My 1st imported auto was an austin healy 3000 for summer but I picked up a 1970 Datsun around 1975 and it was far superior to domestic autos, especially the compacts.
You had asked for an example of a poorly designed Ford mustang turbo and I happened to have had personal experience with one and my opinion of the car was shared with the owner and many other buyers of the turbo charged Mustang from 1979 to 1981 . It was not a highly regarded or successful automobile and nothing that Ford has produced since can change that as it is now a historical fact.
