I am pretty sure everyone has suggested that a Mini isn't a great choice if you're on a budget. Relatively poor reliability, relatively high maintenance costs. An '11 will only have a few months left on its warranty - when the power steering pump or transmission fails, it will be on you.
What happened to the Dart? Did you look at a Fiesta or an Elantra or a Cruze?
You have been asking about cheap highline cars for a long time now - it really sounds like you are trying to justify a financial stretch. It will *never* make sense. Cars are terrible, risky investments. Statistically speaking, high line cars are an even worse investment than standard cars. A Mini will never make as much sense as a Corolla. The only people who should be buying high line cars are people who have reached a place in life where their disposable income is large enough to include a car. For everyone else, a high line car should be a non-starter.
If the Jetta is doing what you need it to, why not just hang onto it until you are in a better financial position? If the answer is that you're just tired of it, believe me I get it - but you need to take a good, hard look in the mirror and at your pocket book and think about what else you *should* be doing with $20,000. I will damn near guarantee you it isn't "buy a car" or "buy a used Mini."
IMHO, The best thing you can do for your finances is buy a CPO'd economy car - something 2-3 years old in the $10k-$14k range that has already taken it's first big depreciation hit and will include a multi-year warranty. Mazda3, Focus, Sentra, whatever it is. I would not be even considering BMWs, Minis, Benzes, or anything like that.
I was in the exact same place as you a long time ago, eyeballing a used Saab and a rich client of mine told me not to be stupid, and keep driving my old POS until I could pay cash for another, reasonable car. It was excellent advice then and it's excellent advice now. Don't let image consciousness guide financial decisions, especially when your finances are young and fragile.
