Dude, you are missing the point. There is no performance bet at the intersection of 30-40mpg and $10k-$14k and warranty. That's a solid commuter car for your commute. Not a GT, ST, turbo, or anything else. It's a nicely equipped smaller car that offers good economy.
You are very hung up on fast, cheap, economical and reliable and I'm sorry to break it to you, but that doesn't exist. If it did, everyone would own one - and it certainly wouldn't be cheap for long.
Every step you take away from the vehicle I've outlined compromises your future budget. If you're fine skipping meals to replace parts on a ten year old Mini or feeding an MS3, by all means go for it. But if $6k-$8k is the limit of your cash, I'm strongly encouraging you to stay modest and live squarely within your means.
I feel like I've repeated myself plenty of times. You do what you want, you have my advice. For the record, it's "don't buy a ten year old European car when you are on anything approaching a budget" followed by "don't buy a performance car if you have a 100 mile a day commute."
