I thought your idea of buying a new Dart was a good one. There's been a huge shift in the world of cars. First, European cars are no longer what they were--they're no longer well built, long lasting cars that you can drive 2 or 3 hundred K with reasonable repairs cost. Second, American and Japanese cars have pretty much closed the gap with the Europeans in terms of fit/finish/materials and more importantly driving dynamics when you look at comparably price cars. Third there's been a small car revolution--there's dozens of high quality, economical cars that offer performance and driving dynamics comparable to high line European cars of a decade ago. So the good news is you can buy some pretty nice cars for the money you're talking. If you're going to finance a car, make it brand new. Anything else will give you the worst of both worlds--car payments AND repairs. Late models car seem good but the repairs will start getting you after two or three years. Certainly the car you pay cash for is cheaper on paper but the sporadic nature of expenses is what gets you. There's much to be said for a fixed monthly payment when you have no big, unexpected repair bills for the length of the warranty. I'd certainly take a look at a Fiesta too. Another car I like is the four door Fiat--it's surprisingly roomy and has a retro/funky look I like.
