thoughts on your trans cooler ( long) Posted by bryan [Email] (#542) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bryan) on Fri, 20 Jan 2006 04:43:08 In Reply to: Re: found source for #8+ ratio primaries - c900!, GM, Thu, 19 Jan 2006 19:55:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
here's some food for thought: i have been working on my trans cooler and have it basically done except the install. an important thing to consider here is the flow of oil through the system. it is true that alot of hear is generated in the diff, but it is also important to understand how much heat is built up in the trans itself. with this in mind, i have plumbed my trans cooler like this: like scanwest, plumbed the effluent line from the diff to remove the hot oil from the diff plate. i have a nice billet plate also. plumb point is low on the plate. second, useed a tilton electric oil pump. sure it's around 200 bucks but it is made specifically for an application like this and you can be certain it will provide proper flow rate. third, place screen filter between effluent and pump. fourth, i bought earl's heat exchangers. they are almost the exact same size as stock, and with a few mods, will bolt into the factory position with all factory equipmemt (except lines, but they do use standard AN fittings so no biggie). the last thing is what i think is most important, I plumped the oil return line into the trans dipstick plate. this is the high point in the trtans between the sump up front, below 5th gear, and the sump in back in the diff. this should provide the best distribuition of cooled oil throughout the tran and diff. while i was at it i decided to rerplace the oil cooler for the engine with the same equipment, and modified the oil filter housing for the AN fittings (I think i used 6 AM all around), and am currently making the braided hoses for both systems.
i am going to establish an entry soon on saabpics to post a bunch of photos. i can provide part numbers for the heat exchangers or pics if you want them.
i would love to buy the scanwest trans. im spending a few months seeing what i can do about machining new sets of gears. it might be infeasible but im working on it.
