I just had a spg9 3" pipe welded at a local shop. The 3" pipe had an adaptor to hook up to the stock cat...the adaptor weld didn't hold. The 3" pipe was nonferromagnetic, the adaptor WAS magnetic. The welder said it wasn't necessary to use ss wire (which would require a TIG and/or argon shield/MIG) because the weld would end up alloying with the stainless anyway and would probably be almost as corrosion free as an ss weld.
So unless you want a showcar system and polish it, I'd just use std wire and a mig (flux-core wire) welder. Butt welds are not the best things to learn on so if you can flange or swage the tubes you'll get a much better system.
