Use 316L bare welding wire on 316 or 316L pipe (or tubing) using Argon as a shielding gas with TIG welding.
308 wire on 304 s.s.
309 wire on stainless to carbon steel.
The 3" exhaust that Group9 was selling is 304 stainless steel tubing. The tubing is TIG welded joints with 304 wire. The carbon steel flanges are MIG welded with what should be 309 wire. You will notice that the flanges and the welds at the flanges will rust.

Below is a photo of a 3" Group9 downpipe that I am modifying for an external wastegate. Notice the rust on the flange weld.
