It depends what you mean by perform better and what you mean by grip. All other things equal including tires, the greatest advantage of a top drawer AWD system is undoubtedly the ability to climb slippery steep grades. This is the one area where it really is NO contest. Second, AWD has an advantage putting power down for acceleration especially under low traction conditions, however, the extra weight MAY offset this advantage under favorable traction conditions depending on the specific situation being considered such that AWD will be favored under some situations and FWD under others. The higher the power output and the worse the surface traction the more likely it will be that AWD has advantage although the real issue is are you going to break tire traction and how much will this cost you.
There is no lateral grip advantage. To the contrary the extra weight can decrease lateral grip and degrade handling. All other things equal the extra weight also degrades braking although you probably would not notice it unless you measured it.
Personally, I have always been fine with FWD for winter driving and really don't think AWD is such a big deal for most real world (including winter)situations. Then again if I lived in one of the "mountain states" I might feel different and want the traction advantage.
