because it puts the power down to all four corners. If for what ever reason the rear-end comes out, the front driving wheels will bring it back in line. Now it is true that the AWD is heavier, and has much more friction, but on the other hand it allows the skilled driver to wait longer before braking into a turn. This generally equates to better lap times.
I can tell you our Audi quattro far out handles the Saab BUT, the Saab, with less HP and torque will beat it in a drag race because the Saab is lighter.
The Audi Allroad aside, climbing steep grades has NOTHING to do with why Audi came out with the Quattro 20 yrs ago, and EVERYTHING to do with handling. Subaru, OTO, is looking to capitalize on the SUV market with the Outback and Forester (so is Audi, I guess, with the Allroad) but they too originally were looking to improve handling -- they've been doing it nearly as long, if not longer that Audi. Just haven't been doing the performance side of it quite as long...
The NG900/9-3 was rumored to have AWD in development, but it never panned out. Would have been cool to have AWD along with the Sensonic automatic clutch.
Nuff rambling...
