Balance shafts - to delete or not to delete... Posted by AdamB [Email] (#3) [Profile/Gallery] (more from AdamB) on Sun, 23 Nov 2008 19:27:26 In Reply to: balance shaft chain question, joel, Sat, 22 Nov 2008 13:08:05 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
On the 2 liter engines I've yet to see a single report of anyone regretting a removal of balance chain or shafts. On the 2.3 there are a few who've experienced increased engine noise and vibration and a lot who didn't notice a difference. But it depends a lot on the condition of your engine mounts and other mods. For example if you have a performance exhaust you probably won't notice the slight difference in engine noise.
9-5s have more noise and vibration after balance shaft delete because of it's engine mounts.
Benefits to removing the chain or shafts are removal of a considerable source of major engine destruction. The balance chain and cogs are known to fail before the timing transmission and when it does it also wrecks the timing chain causing major damage. It's especially a good idea on tuned cars as it increases throttle response (like a lightened flywheel), saves 5-10 hp and since the balance shaft chain system is a weak spot on high revving engines.
