I've done a lot of thinking about this myself and read long threads on Swedish Saab forums where there are lots of people who have done it. At the moment I'm going all in with a B234 engine renovation including JE pistons. I'm going to remove the balance shafts but keep the engine mounts stock and have the engine very carefully balanced both internally and externally with a SPEC flywheel + clutch, because I use it as a daily driver going about 60 miles back and forth to work every day.
I have a 3" exhaust, so probably won't hear any difference, but since it's a 2.3 I risk getting a bit more vibration. With my current 2.0 B204 engine I wouldn't think twice though...
