The flywheel doesn't serve to balance the crankshaft, the damper pulley is specifically designed to tackle that job. I honestly don't know if it will make a difference, I was simply pointing out that it is something to be considered. Also, the main bearings don't suffer much from the load on the engine, that force is mostly absorbed by the rod bearings. The main bearings absorb the forces that cause the crankshaft to vibrate, and the damper pulley dampens those vibrations. Reducing 5-10 pounds of rotating mass, will definitely help your 1st gear acceleration, but will have very little effect on engine load characteristics that cause wear to rod bearings.
As far a face turning the pulley, and removing rubber, that will have no effect on the rubber holding the assembly together. Good luck, I'm interested to see how much power you can get out of that engine. Are you planning to do any work to the head...porting, larger exhaust valves, etc.?
