On an '88 the only thing that would interrupt fuel is the overpressure switch under the dash. That's on LH 2.2 cars, not on LH 2.4 cars. When that overpressure switch trips, your fuel pump cuts out entirely and the car stops accelerating NOW. On LH 2.4 cars the ECU just cycles the injectors and it's a much less dramatic effect.
