Yeah, that's my thinking too regarding the screen modification . . . potentially endangering the low-friction oil pump that the fine mesh screen is designed to protect.
What's disconcerting to me is that the soft "coffee grind" stuff seems to be the result of oil passing through turbo and piston port spray, where temperatures are around 700-1000 degrees, or roughly double to triple what can be expected in the oil pan even with the catalytic converter nearby. That means the production of that fine "coffee grind" is an ongoing process (just like plaque accumulation or cellular replication error, both part and parcel of being alive!)
That means pan dropping would have to be a regular undertaking (obviously economically infeasible). That's why my first preference is Bob Bright's modified pan with removable window . . . except the patent holder is not responding to product request. LOL. The next best thing I can think of is solvent and drain through the drain plug hole. Does diesel dissolve those soft carbon particulates? or do I have to rig up a stirring/vibrating mechanism to cause those particulates to temporarily suspend in diesel/solvent, then try to dump the "bath water" through the drain hole. What's the effective solution for cleaning the oil pickup screen when the pan is dropped?
