Mr. Shad Laws on ShopTalk forum has bad information. His first statement is:

"Hello-
In many synthetic debates on these forums, I've often stated that at least at this current date, the "new tri-synthetic formulated" Mobil 1 is NOT a true synthetic oil. I've also stated that in the past, it probably was a real group IV/V synthetic. I've said that it is a hydrocracked petroleum - a group III oil. However, every time I say it, people disagree with me.

Guess what: I found proof!

First, a reference item for comparison: Delvac 1 (mfd. by Mobil) is a very high quality synthetic oil designed primarily for fleet use. If you do a google/yahoo on it, you'll find lots of spec sheets online - not much marketing gimmick around this stuff. You'll find, however, that in that marketing there are some FAQ, and one of them clearly states that this is a group IV/V synthetic, not a hydrocracked petroleum.

NOWHERE in ANY Mobil marketing info is this question ever addressed about Mobil 1.

Now, the pour point of Delvac 1 (5w-40) is -55F. The pour point of new Mobil 1 (15w-50) is -38F. But, alas, one could argue that they are different viscosity indicies, right?

Here's the kicker: I was in Target today and I happened to wander into the automotive section. Here in the Midwest, not many people buy heavy weight oils. I stuck my hand in the back of the shelf and pulled out an old bottle of Mobil 1 15w-50. The info was printed on the bottle - not on stickers like new bottles. And, there was no "tri-synthetic" stuff written anywhere.

I found the missing link. The pour point of the old Mobil 1 is -55F.

Indeed, new Mobil 1 is NOT a true synthetic."

The product data sheet for the Mobil 1 SuperSyn
http://dallnd6.dal.mobil.com/Apps/DS/_39gj50ko_/MobilPDS.nsf/26b7c4b33367a4a086256665004e4266/61638dff7d0453b085256b8400618b40?OpenDocument

shows that Mobil 1 15W-50 has a pumpability limit of -35F and a pour point of -49F.

Shad Law states that his 'proof' that Mobil 1 is a type III hydrocracked product BECAUSE the pour point of a Type IV/V synthetic motor oil should be similar to the 'old' tri-synthetic Mobil 1 15W-50 pour point of -55F NOT the -38F pour point he says he found printed on the bottle.

According to the “old” tri-synthetic Mobil 1 data sheet

http://www.imperialoil.com/pdf/mobil1trisynthetic.pdf

the tri-synthetic Mobil 1 15W-50 has a pumpabilty limit of –38F and a pour point of –55F. The ‘new’ SuperSyn Mobil 1 15W-50 has a pumpability limit of -35F and a pour point of -49F. A loss of 5F in the pour point BUT an improvement of 3F in the pumpability limit. This difference could be batch related, measurement related, or because of the new SuperSyn formula. But it does not 'proof' that Mobil 1 SuperSyn in not a true Type IV/V synthetic oil.

The basic information Mr. Laws uses to say that Mobil 1 SuperSyn is a Type III hydrocracked oil not a Type IV/V true synthetic oil is just plain wrong.

Here is additional information I found this morning on the various links found on the Mobil 1 web site (http://www.mobil1.com):

Q. What is Mobil 1 and why is it now called Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™?
A. Mobil 1 is a fully synthetic motor oil for automotive engines. It is made from a unique combination of high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefin (PAO), plus the SuperSyn™ anti-wear system for protection under the most extreme use. Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ is available in five viscosity grades:
· Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 10W-30 – Higher-Mileage Vehicle Formula
· Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 5W-30 – Newer Vehicle Formula
· Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 15W-50 –Performance Driving Formula
· Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 0W-30 – Enhanced Fuel Economy Formula
· Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 0W-40 –European Car Formula
Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ is truly a global formulation, exceeding the latest standards from the government, the oil industry and vehicle manufacturers. For instance, the appropriate grades of Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ exceed ILSAC GF-3, API Service SL/CF, European ACEA standards and Japanese valvetrain requirements. In addition, some viscosity grades exceed specific OEM standards. One example is Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 0W-40, which exceeds Mercedes Benz's 229.3 specification. As a CF rated oil, Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ can also be used in diesel engines calling for a CD oil.

Mobil 1 With SuperSyn™ Fully Synthetic Motor Oil
Product Description
Mobil 1 fully synthetic motor oils are manufactured using non-conventional, high-performance fluids. These include polyalphaolefins (PAOs) and other ExxonMobil® engineered fluids which make up the Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ formula.
The unique combination of high-performance fluids and proprietary additive systems enables Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ motor oils to offer advantages beyond their conventional SAE viscosity-grade counterparts. Conventional mineral oils thicken or thin dramatically with changes in temperature.
To compensate for this weakness, manufacturers add thickeners to conventional multigrade oils to slow thinning as engine temperatures rise. Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ fully synthetic motor oils have naturally high resistance to changes in viscosity due to temperature, and therefore require less of these thickeners. This results in a heavier, more stable protective oil film for engine bearings and piston rings than provided by similar SAE viscosity-grade mineral oils.

Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ protects engines up to 204° C (400° F). It contains less impurities, so it protects better than conventional oils in cold weather (as shown by the pumpability limits indicated in the table below). This means that Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ provides outstanding protection against wear at start-up, when most engine wear occurs.

Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ is fully compatible with mineral-based or conventional motor oils. Any mixing of Mobil 1 products with conventional oils, however, will only dilute Mobil 1's many advantages. Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ is also compatible with all other synthetic motor oils, but mixing synthetics is discouraged.

Applications
Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ fully synthetic, detergent-dispersant oils are designed for passenger car and light truck gasoline or diesel engines requiring API Service SL, SJ or CF. Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 0W-30, 5W-30 and 10W-30 also exceed ILSAC GF-3 (Starburst Certification Mark) requirements.
Especially if the vehicle is still under warranty, owners should always consult their owner's manual for the correct oil quality and viscosity grade recommended for their vehicle.
Depending on the viscosity grade, Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ motor oils meet or exceed the requirements of all major automobile manufacturers, including General Motors GM 4718M and Daimler-Chrysler MS 9615. Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ meets or exceeds the more demanding European ACEA requirements and Japanese valvetrain wear requirements. Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 0W-40 is also approved for Mercedes-Benz MB 229.3.
Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ is not recommended for 2-cycle or aviation engines unless specifically approved by the manufacturer.
Within the above API Service Classifications, Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 0W-30, 5W-30 and 10W-30 can be used anywhere an SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 10W-30, 10W-40, 5W, 10W, 20W, 20 or 30 grade viscosity is recommended.
Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 0W-30, 5W-30 and 10W-30 improve fuel economy, exceeding the newest fuel efficiency rating – "Energy Conserving." Their cold-temperature performance is superior to conventional SAE 5W-30, 10W-30 and 10W-40 oils, easing the load on battery-started engines, especially at temperatures below -18° C (0° F). Owners of all cars should follow the car maker's recommendations for oil drain and filter change intervals.
Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 0W-40 is formulated for newer European cars, especially those with advanced-technology, multi-valve engines. It can be used where an SAE 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-30 or 5W-40 grade viscosity is recommended.
Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 15W-50 can be used where SAE 15W-40, 15W-50, 20W-50, 15W, 20W, 20, 30, 40 or 50 grade viscosity is recommended.
Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 15W-50 is especially suitable for high-performance cars, particularly hot-running or heavily loaded vehicles and supercharged vehicles.
Mobil 1 products, race-proven under severe conditions, provide outstanding endurance and performance.
