"Fully synth" is the term Mobil sued Castrol over. Castrol won. It came down to the definition of 'synthetic' as something not occuring in nature, something result from a human-designed process. So, Group III was counted as synthetic because you can't get it straight out of the ground (as you can with Group 1 & II).
Mobil 1 Tri-Syn is a blend of two different Group V's and one Group IV (PAO). Old Mobil 1 was straight PAO (IV) with absolutely nothing on it. It did tend to dry out older seals. The Group V's are far more compatible with seals and engines, at the cost of pour point and other characteristics.
I agree with Dean, though, Mobil will see the economics and cave in. If they're smart, they'll spin off the Group IIIs as "Mobil 2" or something and undersell Castrol (and their HUGE margin on the Syntec).
