Look deaper Eric. The joy of AWD is that it is AWD. Specifically, there is ALWAYS a wheel with power. By using a hydraulic clutch tied to both trannies, you remove power from ALL wheels when you are shifting. That is counter-productive. The torque converters and automatic clutches will do the jobs for you, and split the jobs between front and rear trannies. This way, both trannies will ALWAYS be providing power to at least one of their wheels. This way miniscule speed/distance mismatches between trannies and tires will also be relieved and not become an issue.
The only thing you might want to link between the trannies is vacuum downshift capability, so that they are always in the same gear (unless a severe mismatch on rocky terrain occurs).
