Sorry Chaz im with Eric on this one,
Ive seen some very fast and well engineered VW's in my time with twin engineed manual gearboxes and in practice they work very well.
The cars mentioned had hydraulic clutches and the gearshift was duplicated but operated by one conventional lever with the ability to disconnect the 'rear' engine from the shifter and just use the front for day to day use.
This car shared a common cooling system for both engines so that the rear engine could be fired up on demand and have hot coolant instantantly.
The car......... a mk3 golf with twin VR6 Turbo engines!!!!!!!!!!!!!, made by a guy called Ian Birch - a very clever guy, this car was around 700bhp the last time i saw it and had only been set up the night before it ran a 11'ish second 1/4.
As i say it was only on a basic map to get it running cleanly, with further work it could and probably is running sub 11 seconds with a top speed of over 190mph.
Awesome!!!
Pete.
