On your 'beater' first relocate the battery and install big downpipe that eliminates the 90 degree cast bend. I'm pretty sure with the stock IC that makes as much an improvement as IC upgrade with stock downpipe, only you get far better spoolup and throttle response as a bonus.
APC 'upgrade' is part of the problem. Have yet to experience one that gives relatively modest initial boost, but keeps pretty much the same boost level to redline. The 18+ psi initial boost surge on most tweaked/upgraded APC's heats things up seriously on acceleration before you reach high rpm's. Good for overtaking on the road, not so good for hooning around a track.
Even on basic boost, you should be making a bit more than 100 hp...
