My car is not all that modified and I cracked the case at the differential last year. The car sat in storage until this spring when I put a rebuilt in from Andrews of Princeton. If you are near MN they might be a good choice. I payed about $850 for a rebuilt, no core charge. These are not fully remanufactured, they pull a box and replace what needs to be, and leave to good stuff alone.
I agree about the power requirements as well. I love big power, smoking the tires, higher rpm launches and these trannies don't like it much. I'm keeping mine around until I scrape up enough money for a classic muscle car or something stronger. I know they don't handle as well, they're not as refined, etc.etc. but they can be fairly bullet proof and put 350+hp to the ground. More my style I guess.
Good luck on the gearbox.
