...with this kind of set up -mainly relying on 22 psi boost to get the power - it was bound to happen. From the specs I guesstimate that you had midrange torque well in excess of the transmission's capabilities, and not that much top end power. With the proper turbo/downpipe, cams, head porting and engine controls you can make 300 hp @ about 6,500 rpm, without exceeding 350ish Nm of torque, which is not so far removed from the 310 Nm any Saab 5-speed is supposed to handle.
Case in point: Saab EV-1, LH 2.2 controlled, 282 hp @ 6,500 rpm, 334 Nm @ 3,500 rpm. Mostly stock 1985 C900 drivetrain components.
Have you seen at what rpm a Skyline or Evo makes its peak power? Trying to do the same at 2/3rds the rpm level without overstressing the drivetrain will be a challenge in -any- car, let alone putting the torque to the tarmac with just two driven wheels...
BTW Scooby folks describe their trannies as 'fragile' too. They're not - they're just not overengineered for the sake of getting 12 sec times at the local dragstrip. If that's your game - buy something cheap, rugged and RWD...
