There is a time-tested and rally-approved method for strengthening the
c900 gearbox. It may not last forever, but tranny explosions are kept to
a minimum.
Get new gears for 2nd, 3rd, & cluster. If you can't get new, get the best
used set you can find.
Shot peen and magnaflux these gears plus the ring & pinion, at the minimum.
New bearings all around. Ericsson pinion bearing upgrade for pre ’89 boxes.
Steel rear diff cover to prevent right-side case deflection under load.
Use an LSD (and/or throttle control) to prevent wheelspin and the
resulting shock loads from the re-establishment of traction.
Get some decent tires and suspension so that you don’t have wheel hop, ever.
Fill with your choice of Amsoil, Mobil 1, Honda MTF, or Redline. If warranted
use a tranny oil cooler.
Tune the motor for more high-rpm power, less midrange torque (hard to give up!).
Refrain from speed shifting and don’t drop-clutch. In plain English, don’t drive
like an idiot (ed smith, I am not saying that you drove like an idiot! these are just
recommendations :) )
There's more (like welding reinforcing rings on the inner drivers) but these are
the basics for 250-300hp motors.
