What gets to me, Cutic, is that folks who go aftermarket claims massive power hikes versus a stock system that is basically 'hacked' to get more fuel and urge everyone to rip out a completely adequate OE system that can do exactly the same or more as the low-end stand alons uses, as long as they are properly programmed. I mean, that's the most basic rule in the permormance tuning 101 book - if you change the VE and/or turbo boost of an engine by a significant amount, you gotta reprogram the engine management. That most folks seem to skimp out on this, or that seemingly there's little know how over there to rechip even a system as basic as LH (I mean, it's been around FOREVER) doesn't mean your aftermarket system is 'vastly superior'. It's just as much a band aid as everything else.
What gets to me too, is that everyone with an aftermarket system seems to pretend they have no driveability issues in having to replicate all the stupid 'day to day'stuff that an OE spends hundreds of hours of programming and testing on. Things like cold running, part throttle maps, different ambient temps, cold and warm starting, idling under various conditions, A/C compressor on/off, et cetera, et cetera. Show me a roadgoing car running aftermarket with (near-) OE driveability characteristics, and I'll show you a four figure dyno bill.
Your buddy maps your fueling and ignition while riding shotgun. Gee, that's nice. I'll stick with someone who's been doing this for a living for the past 15 years, having mapped hundreds of roadgoing and race cars, winning several touring car championships in the process thanks very much ;) I bet my $8K engine will thank me for it...
