I -know- all that. But as said, I don't run anything like stock ignition hardware and fuel maps...
Ignition - stand alone DI ('88 9k). Custom chip. Maps based on MAP sensor output and rpm. Will be re-reprogrammed at next dyno session.
Fuel - LH. Custom chip. Maps based on MAF output, NTC sensor, throttle swtich for WOT and rpm. Will be re-reprogrammed at next dyno session.
My point is: the engine doesn't care -how- it gets optimium ignition timing and fueling as long as it -does- . Aftermarket engine management does not miraculously get you extra power - the quality of the mapping does. If your 3D ignition and fuel maps look the same on the same engine, we will have the same result, regardless whether they are embedded in a DI/LH/Trionic Eprom or dialed in on an aftermarket controller. The only thing you 'save' when dialling in subsequent upgrades on an aftermarket system is the burning of an Eprom. Big deal - I've never been charged for a burnt Eprom so far.
IMO, aftermarket controls only come into play when you exceed the envelope of the stock fuel system, i.e. you can't run an injector big enough for your hp goal because you can't drag down idling and low-load/rpm maps low enough for them not to overfuel. As LH 2.2 (at least my non-lambda version) copes perfectly well with the 346 cc 9000 2.3T inj's, which in a batch fired application are good to well into the 300 hp range, it's a moot point for a c900. My Saab race shop who built the engine only starts to use aftermarket when shooting for the 4-500 bhp range.
Before that, ripping out all your wiring and engine controls, replacing them with an aftermarket system that works on pretty much the same inputs as a stock system, and then let your 'buddy' do the mapping on the road sounds like false economy to me. The money should be spent on mapping, not on hardware.
Oh - Saabine was pushing 250 crank (210 whp) at 1.1 bar max (1.0 top end) with the DI and a smallish turbo, BEFORE really digging into fuel and ignition maps (which will be the scope of the next session - a very driveable 300 should be well attainable...)
