I went with the JT and have dyno before/after numbers (below--I think I've traced the dip down to a hiccup in the wastgate, which it isn't doing anymore). For me the initial benefit was that it added another 500 rpm or so of extremely useable power at the very top. It's been 4 months or so and I still accidently bump into the rev limit pretty frequently because the thing just keeps pulling.
Generally, a bigger diameter exhaust will lessen the low-end torque but improve the high end power output. The other day I read about a guy who ran a full 3", didn't like the results, and ended-up putting a 2.5" tip at the back to recover some of his previously lost low-end torque. That said, I'm extremely happy with the full 3"--and the dyno agrees with my pants-seat and shows I haven't lost a bunch of torque (I am running a single cat).
How far do you plan to go with your car?
Come to the dyno day on 12/4 and I'll give you a ride if you want to take a listen--it's not too bad, not Civic-esque or buzzy, but I wouldn't exactly call it a rumble. :)
I need to call Dave in Houston (who owes me a plate of bar b que anyway) and see if he will come-out with his 2.3 Viggen so maybe you can hear that too. I believe he is running with a removed first muffler and a single cat--and his car sounds great (better than mine I think), which might acutally give you a better idea what less restriction sounds like with your engine than mine would at only 2.0 L and lower compression.
