It's not bad at all to drill the manifold. Buy a 1/4" NPT tap at your local H/W store. Drill a hole the size that the tap package tells you tell. Then tap in the threads. Not much chance of aluminum falling in there. If it does, it won't hurt anything.
Mounted between the carb and the intake manifold, is a plate with fittings on it. One fitting is the PCV valve. It's a one-way valve that connects to the valve cover. It screws in. However, it interferes with the Weber, so you have to unscrew it, plug the hole with a 1/4" NPT plug from the H/W store, and move the PCV valve over to the manifold.
The fancy brake assist also is mounted to the same plate. It goes up to the vacuum assist via rubber tubing- it also has a one way valve in the line.
If you send me your email, I can send you a picture of my installation- it also happens to be a '71.

PS- I know right where Johnson is. My sister-in-law used to live there. I'm over on the west coast of Vermont- on Lake Champlain, half way between Burlington and Middlebury.
