Okay, sounds good.
Yes, the resistor can be, that is an option that also works.
Good, new cap and rotor isn't a bad idea usually. ;-)
Also, check the spark plug wires.
You can check if you get spark after you changed the cap and rotor. Put a plug into the end of one wire, connect it to ground and let someone start the car. Watch if you get good visible spark. If yes, then you should be okay on ignition side.
How did the sparkplugs look like? Are they fuel soaked after the car dies?
Could be some carburettor related problem, i.e. floater level.
If plugs are soaked, usually difficult to burn them free and a new set is a better optin. NGK BP6ES is the recommended sparkplugs.
