So we finally got the inner u-joints disconnected by placing a jack under the front tires so they could be rotated. The shafts tend to hang down anyway, so when you lift the engine and push it to one side, the top knuckle will come clear out of the cup, but the bottom might still be in by 1/4". Rotating the relevant tire basically spins the remaining knuckle out as the cup rotates. The engine has to be swinging from the hoist for this to work, otherwise I suspect it would be too much pressure on the cruciform joint.
