Resolved, or Doing the right thing the wrong way
I can't get the drive gear pin to budge. The mushroomed heads have been filed off. A 2 lb. steel sledge and drift pin apparently aren't enough to initiate any perceptible movement so I quit with that approach.
The idea the 'spring holder' had slipped within limits of the screw slots was tested by my attempting to rotate the holder relative to the drive gear by use of a pin spanner (actually two screwdrivers). No movement in either CW or CCW was possible. That holder is tight.
Don't do what I do. While I had my 'pin spanner' set in hand I pried the upward arms of the spring holder so slightly outward all the while checking the clearance to the ID of the distributor body shell. I may have moved each maybe as much as a mm outward from their start positions.
I reassembled and reinstalled and started the engine.
The strobe shows that mechanical advance is starting right around 1000 rpm, and is at full advance at a bit over 1500.
Was it worth the effort expended? Not really.
