Turns out the new, stiffer springs are wound just a tiny bit too tight and won't seat on the new, upper spring isolator. So what I thought was the spring not going on the upper isolator because of a binding angle is actually just that the isolator won't fit entirely inside the stiffer spring.
When I try the new isolator on the old (OEM) springs, it slips right in.
