Subject: RE: 9000 what oil?
=================
2001's left the factory with Saab Turbo Oil, which is 1/2 synth.

I would use full-synth Mobil 1 or maybe Amsoil, or of course the Saab
oil... But I would definitely stay away from Castrol...

Really, a turbo car needs synthetic (all 9-3SS models ship with full
synth and it's bare minimum as per Saab, just like 9-3's were demanding
semi-synth) to reduce coking on the turbo. If you operate the car
properly (few minute cooldown after driving) a high-quality mineral oil
could suffice, as with your 900T (which also shipped with semi-synth
new... Didn't it?).

But, I would definitely stick to Mobil 1 for changes. The motor in your
9-3 is very similar to your 900, and it is a very robust, durable motor
(typical of Saab), that should well go over 400K and serve you as well
as your 900 did/does, as long as you take care of it (as your 900 seems
to illustrate). Don't forget that, with the same 1985cc displacement,
your 9-3 is probably turning out 210hp (HOT) compared to your 900T which
probably yielded 135. For less gas too I would expect.

There are lots of 9-3's that I have heard of that are experiencing
sludging problems. So are 9-5's. And Toyotas, and Nissans, and
practically any car today. SARS of the auto world it seems.... If you
want to follow Saab's 10k mile oil change interval, you must use
synthetic and a very high quality oil filter. Either use a blue Saab oil
filter, or a Mann oil filter (same thing, different color) or an
AC/Delco oil filter. Do not under any circumstance use a Fram *aka piece
of shit* filtre.
