My father-in-law has a loaded Maxima SE auto (maybe 97 or 98). He drove my 99 9-5 2.3 lpt one day - he's only owned US and Jap cars and knows nothing about Saabs or their supposed quirks - I even have to show him the odd key placement. Comes home, "Wow! - your car is so smooth and fast (he's really excited)... who makes it again?" "Saab", "yeah, but is it a Toyota or Mitsu or what", "no, it's a Saab, that's the company". Finally registers.
One day, I drive his car. I've heard all about the "sweet" Maxima v6. I just feel vibration, and there's little power unless you rev > 35K (granted, over 35K and things are pretty nice). I actually have to full-throttle the car a couple times to work through some traffic - I rarely full-throttle my Saab - I'm not really an aggressive driver. It really didn't seem to accelerate much better than my mini-van (3.8L Chrysler).
Maybe the new Maximas are better. Maybe 97-98 was a bad year. Maybe it's the transmission. Maybe it was bad gas, who knows. But my basic thought was "Yuck". I'm glad I spent the extra $5K and got my Saab.
