John Doe,
To answer you original question - don't buy a Saab EVER. Its the biggest piece of overrated CRAP with a capital C that i've ever been cursed with. I've been babysitting my cousins 2001 9-5 SE for ~ 1 year now while hes out of the country. Already had a minor turbo problem, heater coil problem, seat spring broke, rattles from a gazzilion places, and to top it all off, recently some wiring problem in the fuse box is causing 2 electronic problems (radio doesn't work and the wiper acts intermittently). Granted, the dealer will fix all these free of charge, but still!!
So to make a long story short, stick with Japanese! I was planning to get a 9-5 this year, but now i'm going to stick with my plans for the 2002 Maxima.
Most people who buy Saabs give the following 3 famous corny excuses stemming from their insecurity over the inherent inferiority of the Saab:
1) Well if you want reliability stick w/Japanese. Saabs are for the driving enthusiast.
2) Saabs give you the advantage of standing out from the crowd, since its not a Camry or an Accord.
3) Its European!
Well, all 3 are totally ludicrous excuses. Saab people defending their car kinda reminda me of someone setting you up on a blind date with someone whos not exactly the shiniest apple on the tree. It goes something like this:
"Well, shes not very pretty, shes not really wealthy, and shes not very intelligent - but she has a great PERSONALITY".
So John, ask yourself this - Do you really want to shell out ~$32k for Personality, when you can get a 2002 Maxima for ~ $26k that'll leave the Saab lusting in the Maxima's smoketrails for a whole lotta Japanese blood!
