Several dash lights are not controlled by the dimmer and become very bright when the dash lights are dimmed and the Night Panel is employed. As a result they glare in your eyes and, in my opinion, greatly reduce the utility of the Night Panel. Why bother with the dimmer and night panel if they are not all inclusive?
These rogue lights include the "Cruise" light (why do we need this at all? It's a throw-back to the olden times), the High Beam indicator, the OnStar buttons (shame on them), and the rear fog light indicator. Why should these dash lights continue to blare out at full wattage when everything else in the cabin is dimmed or shut-off so as to facilitate maximum night vision? Are these indicators somehow more important than the others or is it simply sloppy engineering?
While the OnStar lights are pretty much blocked by the steering wheel and the rear fog light is not used all that much, the Cruise and the High Beam indicator lights really bore into you if you are trying to run with dimmed out instrumentation for any length of time. It seems to me that all of these lights should be under the influence of the dimmer, otherwise the benefits of the dimmer are negated.
