Gary: We probably agreeon more on this issue than you think. I also prefer to keep the dash lighting on the dim side. I have absolutely no use for an upshift light, which is probably the brightest star on the Saab's dashboard. Could care less about having a cruise control light on,since I always know when I am on cruise control. You kind of get the picture when you take your foot off the gas and the car keeps going. Also, while we are at it, the Saab lights up the cruise control light when the control stalk switch is put in the on mode, even though you are not yet using cruise until you press the SET button. Other cars I have driven only light up the dash when the cruise is actually activated.
Your point about the high beam and other unafected lights is probably correct in retrospect. My main point about night panel is that if you use the dimmer rheostat, which has been on just about every car's dash since Columbus sailed the ocean blue, there is absolutely no need to even have a night panel button. And in addition, it's poorly veiled references to aircraft instrumentation design are pure BS. All aircraft have their instruments lit at night, and do not extinguish them to relieve the pilot's eyes.
Perhaps Saab will realize this by taking a look at the cockpit of a Saab 340 or 2000 turboprop next time they stop by the airport.
