Sorry, Lou, but I guess I wasn't clear enough about my point. The point is not whether or not you should use these features, but rather the point is that if the designers of the car have decided to include certain features in the car, then those features should be well thought out and should work effectively. Having a light dimming system with holes in it does not reflect very well on the skills of the designers (sorry about the pun).
Not all features are for every one. I happen to have eyes that are light sensitive, and the ability to dim dash lights is very much appreciated by me. I see much better, and I get much less tired, if I turn the dash lights to a minimum. It seems to me that a rheostatic dimmer on all dash lights makes sense - all lights maintain their brightness relative to each other, and I can dim my interior lights as I find helpful, and you can leave yours however you wish. When some lights are left off the dimmer, however, those lights bore right in to my eyes when I use the associated features.
The car designers also decided that some of us might sometimes find high beams useful - maybe you don't - but I do find them useful on occasion, and the un-attenuated high beam indicator, as well as the other always-on-high indicator lights, just blare right though and fry my darkness adjusted eyes. Do I really need to see the OnStar at full glare when everything else is toned down? Can't Cruise be tamed along with the Speedo guage? Is it time to get out the black tape?
Maybe I'm a boob for using some of the car's features, but at least what's designed and built into the car should be thoughtfully executed.
