On my 2000 Aero I could unscrew the case, but sawing it in two doesn't seem like it would be a big deal; it's only a plastic case. I should think you could seal up the case pretty easily with some clear silicone cauk. I cut the batteries out with a dremmel saw, which worked pretty well.
