I think you can solder leads to a standard battery.....

but you need to remove the top coating first to exposed most likely copper or copper alloy below.
I haven't done anything soldering to a battery recently but when I was very young, I used to file off the coating on a standard battery and solder leads to both ends. An alternative is to modify a standard battery clip and glue the batteries in the clips to minimize the batteries from losing contact.
I don't know about laser welding but any temperature that can weld metals is just as hot if not way hotter than my little soldering gun can deliver.
Someone more knowledgable than I please correct me but I seriously doubt soldering a lead to a Lithium battery will significantly reduce the usefulness of a new battery.
I totally agree with you in using AA Lithium batteries with case and all. The original batteries are not rechargeables anyway, so as long as we put any similar batteries with the right voltage should do.
