It depends entirely on what you want and how much time you want to put into it.
Wax is really just a protectant, so if you want a show car shine, you'll have to apply other products first. If all you care about is preserving your clear coat, a thorough wash and a hand-applied coat of carnauba wax will do just fine. I like Mother's products, but there are lots of other brands like Kit and Meguirs. Stay away from things like "cleaner wax." It contains abrasive agents. The trick is to be really thorough when you wash the car.
If you have the time and energy and want a really nice shine, try Mother's three step process: 1) pre wax cleaner (liquid) 2) sealer/glaze (liquid) and 3) California Gold wax (paste). You'll have a nice deep shine. If you want to go a step further start out with a clay bar on trouble spots.
Some products are marketed as an all-in-one, single application, shine and protect, etc. I don't think these live up to the hype. There are a lot of synthetic polishes out there that a lot of people swear by (like Zymol). They tend to be expensive, and I just prefer classic paste carnauba wax. I've used a lot of the polishes, and I have never gotten results like the three-step process above, though granted it requires a lot more effort.
